A Guide To Job Hunting Techniques

Want to improve your techniques to get a better job - these tips are here to help.

#1:  Take Time With The Job Hunt

In most cases, finding a job can be a stressful task.  Not only are you looking to enter the field you are most interested in, but parents and peers can also pressurize you.  Many graduates choose the first job offer they receive to deal with these pressures, as well as other reasons such as school debt.  If possible, it is best to take time before finding a job after graduating.  Take time to enjoy the warm weather, travel, take up some hobby, volunteer – basically, decompressing before entering the “adult world”.  Career professionals indicate that this decompression is essential to maintain good mental and physical health.  In fact, it also looks good on a resume or in a portfolio when submitting applications.

#2:  Remain Grounded While Aiming High

When considering the different jobs in various industries, it is important to match your field of study with employment.  The saying goes that you should aim for the stars and “go big or go home”; however, organizing the job search can help when looking through hundreds of advertisements.  Treat a job hunt like a college search with categories for “safety nets”, “reach companies” and “wild cards”. Read these tips for establishing your brand.

It can be disappointing but not all companies will contact you after you apply for the job.  While it can make a person despondent, you should not rule anything or company out.  Working in your comfort zone is effective but you should attempt stretching beyond it, such as applying to a “household name” company that can build your career immediately.  Finally, you should remember that a first job is only a first job – an initial step to bigger and better things.

#3:  Emphasizing Your Skills

Believe it or not, mentioning your studies and classroom experience can be advantageous.  Work experience is beneficial when submitting applications, but most employers nowadays want to know what skills you have beyond your portfolio or resume.  Speaking about your personal skills (such as interpersonal communication, teamwork or leadership) along with technical skills (such as coding) build a good image during an interview.  You should also mention any certifications you have attained, as well as certificates you are pursuing.

#4:  Show Curiosity

Employers are often impressed by applicants who are interested in their company beyond the basic job details.  Show some curiosity during interviews by asking intelligent questions about the business and role.  Of course, you must remain respectful during interviews but take the chance to “interview” the HR professional and show an interest.

#5:  Be Prepared

Being prepared may be considered a “no brainer”, but it is shocking how many applicants go to interviews without previous preparation.  Winging it is not appreciated, particularly since the internet offers information on the company.  Explore the company’s social media accounts, read through online press rooms, and examine employer profiles to know as much as possible about the business.

LinkedIn is a strong social media platform allowing you to view graduates from your college, where they are now, and the different jobs they had in the past.  Try contacting them regarding job opportunities and advice.  Blogs and trade journals are also effective to become more educated on IT topics ranging from online security and privacy to 5G devices.

#6:  Be Somewhat Selfish

Finding a job contributes to your future, so you should search through company opportunities dedicated to career development.  Networking with professionals can leverage connections and help with applications.  For instance, working with people you know in the company can be a good “step up”.  You should also look at gaining introductions with company professionals.  Evidence shows that the chance of a response increases when contacting HR, recruiters or the hiring manager.

Companies that also encourage development through away days and other forms of corporate trips can be a great benefit and worthwhile considering over those that don't. Conferences, meetings and away days can do a lot to bolster your development. Redwing, who provide coach hire in Sussex for these sorts of trips told us they see a lot more of this sort of thing going on becuase these away days and trips benefit both employer and employee.

#7:  Thinking Both Long And Short-Term

If possible, you should consider whether or not you work well with the hiring manager.  Take note of intangibles and ask about career progression.  Looking at mentorship programs, business culture, advancement opportunities and skills development can help with job searches.
